Eight Blue Flag Awards and a Green Coast Award for Plett
Plettenberg Bay has been awarded 8 international Blue Flag Awards for 2023/2024.
One of the most recognizable voluntary eco-labels in the world the Blue Flag designation is given to marinas, beaches, and eco-friendly boat trip companies.
Six of Plett’s beaches had their blue flag status re-newed:
Robberg 5, The Waves, Nature’s Valley, Lookout, The Dunes, and Singing Kettle.
In addition to the beach awards, two boats operated by Offshore Adventures were awarded blue flag status.
Several strict environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility requirements must be fulfilled and upheld. There are 4500 locations throughout 45 nations in order for a site to be eligible for the Blue Flag.

Plett is one of 40 South African attractions spread across five destinations that have received this honor. It shows our ongoing dedication to sustainable tourism.
This includes our maritime operations, conservation projects, and the beach management team of Bitou Municipality.

Nature’s Valley received its first Green Coast Award from WESSA, marking yet another first for Plett.
W.e.s.s.a. created a second coastal award for use along South Africa’s coastline. This was in response to the popularity of the Blue Flag ecolabel and the realization that it is only appropriate for a small area of urban shoreline.
The Green Coast Award, which was formally inaugurated in 2017 and is an annual award program.
It rewards inclusive and sustainable management at less developed coastal places with significant biodiversity value, is a noteworthy distinction for Nature’s Valley.
WESSA CEO Helena Atkinson recognized and applauded the extraordinary efforts of volunteerism, local government, and communities in reaching world class standards this season.
In the environmental sector, WESSA has continuously led the way, fostering progress and motivating people. South Africa has benefited greatly from WESSA’s wide range of programs and activities. These have also helped to promote an environmentally conscious culture there.
“It takes great dedication and effort to manage a beach or marina to meet the rigorous standards set out for this prestigious award. We extend our warmest congratulations to all the deserving sites that have achieved the eco-labels,” she said. Then Helena adding that achieving Blue Flag or Green Coast eco-label was not just a status symbol but an indication of collective effort, commitment and compliance.
